At Podcast Show 2023, Simplecast and AdsWizz organized an in-person event aimed at podcasters of all sizes, providing valuable insights and inspiration to enhance their podcast technology strategies. The event offered podcasters an immersive experience, blending thought leadership, live interviews, interactive Q&A sessions, and access to valuable content. It aimed to inform, entertain, and inspire podcasters to optimize their podcast technology strategies and explore new avenues for success.

AdsWizz featured two thought leadership panels on the main stages.

The Many Flavors Of Podcast Monetization: An In-depth Look At The Variety Of Ways, Including Innovative Ad Formats
  • Moderator: Lou Nylander, Founder & Director – Wildflowers of London Marketing
  • Brieuc Verwilghen, VP, Head of Partnerships & Strategy, EMEA & APAC, AdsWizz
  • Justine Benjamin, Head of Global Marketing, AdsWizz

This session delved into the diverse approaches to monetizing podcasts, exploring innovative advertising formats and strategies. The speakers provided valuable insights into effective monetization techniques, offering attendees a comprehensive understanding of the landscape.

  • AdsWizz has been in the audio advertising industry since 2008 and focuses solely on audio. They have played a significant role in shaping the industry. AdsWizz was the first to introduce Dynamic Ad Insertion (DAI) for podcasts in 2012, giving them extensive experience and a robust solution in the market.
  • DAI refers to the technology that delivers pre-recorded ads through an ad server, allowing flexibility, better targeting, monetization of back catalogs, and improved ad measurement.
  • According to the IAB US, 84% of host-read ads are served via DAI. The AdsWizz platform shows percentages ranging from 70% to 90%+ globally.
  • The natural progression for publishers and podcasters with their monetization involves transitioning from targeting only big shows to tapping into the untapped audience, utilizing brand safety and targeting tools, and embracing automation in the ad-buying process.
  • Exciting developments in podcast adtech include the shift to contextual targeting, advancements in measurement despite limited user data, and innovative formats for measuring campaign performance.
What Brands and Agencies Need to Know to Harness the Audio Revolution
  • Moderator: Damian Scragg, GM of International, Veritonic
  • Nadia Holmes, Head of Business Development, Octave Audio
  • Lindsay Lynch, Business Development Director, International, AdsWizz

The rapid growth of global podcast ad spending has significant implications for brands and agencies. Veritonic’s Damian Scragg hosted industry experts to discuss measuring audio and podcast creative. The conversation focused on accurate measurement’s impact on the expansion and future of audio advertising. Our very own Lindsay Lynch delivered a comprehensive presentation that covered essential information for brands and agencies to leverage the power of audio.

  • Dynamic Creative Optimization (DCO) involves creating multiple versions of ads that adapt based on a listener’s context, such as their location, weather, or age. This strategy effectively enhances brand metrics across various parameters.
  • Regarding DCO, AdsWizz executed a campaign for Mustard, a UK car insurance comparison company. The campaign resulted in a 47% increase in favorability towards the Mustard brand when listeners were exposed to a personalized DCO ad.
  • Brands and agencies should not be concerned about the perceived “lack of measurement” in audio campaigns. We can collaborate with third-party partners to conduct brand lift studies, and we also possess the capability to measure engagement through formats like ShakeMe, Voice Activated Ads, or by utilizing an audio pixel.

Did you know that the average consumer encounters up to 10,000 ads in a single day? With such information overload, the key to standing out lies in creating compelling messages and in delivering these messages to the right audience at the right moment. So, how can brands guarantee that their ads hit the mark? The answer lies in the power of dynamic ad insertion (DAI).

What is Dynamic Ad Insertion?

Have you ever noticed how the ads you get while streaming audio or listening to a podcast differ from what your friend hears? The reason: DAI lets brands deliver personalized ads to listeners based on data insights like their location, time of day, and even the weather.

DAI can swap out ads in real-time while listeners stream a podcast, one benefit being the same ads don’t deliver repeatedly. For downloaded podcasts, dynamic ad insertion can also be a great way to make ads more relevant to the listener and create data-rich targeted ads, causing a massive difference in how ads resonate with consumers. Podcasts enable advertisers to implement highly targeted and contextually relevant strategies, leveraging specific targeting parameters, such as location, weather, time of day, and more, to fine-tune their advertising efforts.

DAI also provides a wealth of analytics that offer valuable insights into ad performance and audience engagement allowing for informed decision-making and optimization of ad campaigns. In comparison, traditional download-based models need more real-time analytics and detailed performance data, making tracking ad effectiveness and optimizing targeting strategies harder.

Why DAI is a Game-Changer

Advertisers increasingly leverage DAI to deliver seamless and automated digital ads, which has helped podcasting become one of the fastest-growing digital media channels. This growth is due to the increased revenue generated by targeting via DAI. The figures are clear: podcast ad revenue in the US exceeded $1 billion for the first time in 2021, and DAI played a significant role in that growth. In fact, over the past two years, DAI has seen remarkable growth, now accounting for 84% of ad revenue, nearly doubling its market share. DAI’s widespread adoption substantially benefits advertisers, offering increased scale, flexibility, and targetability in their advertising campaigns. The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) predicts that podcast ad revenue will continue to grow, reaching over $4 billion by 2024.

But DAI’s potential extends far beyond podcasts. Audio consumption is rapidly rising, with an impressive nine out of ten US radio listeners now streaming AM/FM radio content. That’s a whopping fifteen thousand radio stations now available on streaming platforms! And the revenue projections for the music streaming market are nothing to put on mute either, with a staggering $25.71 billion expected in 2023. DAI is poised to be a key player in the future of audio content consumption, too.

Unlocking the Benefits of DAI

With DAI, brands can deliver revenue-generating content across various streaming devices. Plus, DAI enables targeting ads to specific criteria, making them more relevant and memorable for listeners and improving the listening experience by eliminating those annoying gaps and buffering that can happen between the content and ads. DAI also provides data-focused targeting, which can lead to better consumer interactions with advertisers and brands. And let’s not forget about monetizing back-catalog podcast episodes—this is essential because new listeners tend to go back and binge a podcast’s older content.

DAI is essential for scalable podcasting, revenue growth, and seamless listening. It enables smaller publishers to diversify monetization, access more advertisers, and generate revenue comparable to larger publishers. DAI works alongside the baked-in model, repurposing inventory for ad delivery. It offers real-time ad performance insights, empowering advertisers to optimize campaigns. A/B testing of ad formats, placements, and messaging enhances effectiveness. With various vendors offering solutions, DAI has matured as a technology, providing advertisers with a broad range of options.

The Case for DAI for Podcasts and Streaming

One of the most compelling attributes of DAI is that ads can change over time, so listeners will only hear timely and relevant ads. This means no more hearing about offers that have already expired, events that have already happened, or outdated information and techniques.

DAI also gives creators and advertisers more control. Podcast creators have more oversight in the listening experience, even long after publishing an episode. As for advertisers, DAI offers them the benefits of running host-read ads but with much more flexibility around audience targeting, campaign timing, and impression delivery, making them perfect for time-based events, news updates, or anything else designed to drive tune-in.

What Makes DAI So Different from Standard Scheduling?

Ads served via an ad server can be customized based on variables such as demographics or historical listening, providing a more personalized experience than standard scheduling. This customization resembles a tailor-made suit, while traditional scheduling resembles a store-bought one. In a recent campaign with Mustard, a car insurance comparison tool, dynamic creative versioning was implemented to enhance brand awareness and favorability. The campaign targeted Mustard users in key UK locations, delivering tailored messaging based on age and location. The results showed significant improvements in awareness (+14ppt), relevance (+14ppt), and intent (+5ppt) among the targeted audience, with a substantial increase in favorability and purchase intent for all listeners, highlighting the effectiveness of dynamically targeted creative in connecting with specific audiences.

What You Should Take from DAI

DAI is a game-changing technology that has revolutionized advertising on podcasts and streaming platforms. Its ability to deliver personalized, targeted ads benefits marketers, podcast producers, and streaming publishers. It enhances audience engagement, increases revenue, and caters to the evolving needs of the digital advertising ecosystem.

How could your brand leverage the power of DAI?

AdsWizz joined forces with Simplecast from March 7-10, 2023, at the Westgate Resort and Casino in downtown Las Vegas for Podcast Movement Evolutions! From networking opportunities to speaker sessions, the best parties around, and more, Evolutions always creates a space where podcasting thrives. With over 10,000 podcasters attending over the last eight years from over 35 different countries (and growing), Evolutions continues to be a cornerstone event for the industry, and we always show up and show off our podcast technology stack for creators and advertisers of all sizes.

We Showcased Podcast Creators and Listeners

We highlighted Simplecast’s Creator Connect, a solution offering podcasters tools to submit, manage, and grow their show across Stitcher, Pandora, and more. Attendees swung by our photo booth to snap a Polaroid for our Creator Connect photo collage, went on a “blind date” with a podcast to learn about all the fantastic content already hosted on the Simplecast platform, and just hung out between sessions to chat with the team. Beyond a packed schedule of daytime events, Evolution’s nightlife was filled with the best parties. Simplecast’s Creator Connect Afterparty was no exception, drawing over 300 attendees to the Peyote Restaurant on the old Las Vegas strip – an old-school hotel converted into a kitschy Latin-themed restaurant and bar. It was an experience to remember with great music from a live DJ, excellent conversations, and delicious food and drinks – a space for creators to truly connect!

Indie Podcasters Weren’t the Only Ones to Get In on the Fun

AdsWizz had an in-depth speaker session around podcast advertising tailored to Publishers interested in monetizing their content through programmatic opportunities entitled “Programmatic Progress Report: A Temperature Check for Publishers.” Featuring AdsWizz VP of Programmatic and Marketplace Partnerships, Robyn Meyers, and Senior Director of Business Development, Cyril Bornette, the session was a candid conversation around programmatic podcast advertising from the Publisher’s perspective – pros, cons, and unknowns. The session offered use cases from different size podcast creators leveraging programmatic advertising today and industry-related challenges that must be overcome to make programmatic advertising work seamlessly for podcasts.

Podcast Movement Evolutions has become a staple in our event catalog over the past few years. We look forward to continuing that tradition as the podcast industry evolves.

Inventory Forecasting in audio advertising involves predicting the availability and demand of ad slots or impressions in the future, typically over a specified period. This capability helps publishers, buyers, and ad networks optimize their ad strategies and allocate resources more effectively.

As an audio publisher selling your inventory directly, Forecasting is a critical tool offering valuable insights to help plan and execute campaigns more effectively.

For example, suppose you wish to run an audio advertising campaign in a specific location. In that case, you’re probably wondering how many people to reach in the next several months. And if you’re targeting a particular group (like mobile listeners in their 30s), it can seem even more daunting.

The Inventory Forecast function in AudioServe can analyze past traffic data and assess your potential audience for the next 90 days. By considering details about the campaign, such as its nature, duration, and target audience, Inventory Forecast can predict the number of opportunities for serving your future ads. The best part is that it helps you set realistic targets for your audio ads, eliminating the need for manual calculations that could result in under or over-delivery.

How it Works

Forecasting for audio ads differs from the world of display ads. With display ads, the number of requests and impressions matches closely. However, when it comes to audio advertising on platforms like radio and podcasts, ad breaks occur, and listeners may disconnect, meaning that the number of requests is higher than the impressions delivered.

Furthermore, there’s an added layer of intricacy to audio advertising. For example, in a 90-second time slot, an advertiser can choose to play three 30-second ads or six 15-second ads, creating a new and essential metric for tracking inventory. In addition to impressions, Inventory Forecast needs to consider the size of the opportunity or the potential for success.

To meet these challenges, our Inventory Forecast feature leverages complex algorithms that evaluate audio-specific metrics like ad break duration, the maximum number of ads in an ad break, potential ad clashing, and whether a companion banner will complement the audio. Considering all these factors, Inventory Forecast ensures that your audio ads have the desired impact and reach the right audience.

When you operate AudioServe, you’ll notice that it defaults to a 30-second ad duration, but you can customize your metrics based on how you define ad durations. If you prefer a shorter 15-second ad duration, you can easily adjust it to suit your needs.

When utilizing our Inventory Forecast for the first time, it’s worth noting that it takes around five weeks to activate the data, a standard practice for any forecasting tool in the industry that relies on historical data to provide reliable predictions and meaningful results to help guide your ad strategy.

Forecasts are also available for buyers operating our DSP, AudioMatic, who can leverage the Media Planning tool to gain insights and plan future buys for maximum campaign delivery.

Agreement expected to enhance access to Hispanic audio content for advertisers

Spanish Broadcasting System to migrate onto AdsWizz’s technology stack

(San Mateo, CA – Oct 4, 2022) - US-based Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS) Inc. today announces AdsWizz Inc. as the exclusive programmatic sales representative of SBS’s Hispanic audio inventory, following SBS’s migration onto the AdsWizz technology stack. SBS will now benefit from AdsWizz’s hosting, ad insertion, campaign management, yield optimization and more.

As the largest publicly traded minority-owned media and entertainment company in the US, SBS has unparalleled reach within the Hispanic community for four decades thanks to its culturally relevant audio, digital, video and live music experiences. For example, SBS’s AIRE Radio Networks delivers Spanish-language radio programming to more than 300+ affiliated stations, reaching 95% of the U.S. Hispanic audience.

This new relationship allows SBS to leverage AdsWizz’s state-of-the-art audio technology and regional media sales channels, including SXM Media, the combined advertising sales group of Sirius XM Holdings Inc., to make demand source connections and monetization more efficient and streamlined.

For advertisers, this also means easier and broader access to SBS’s highly engaged and sought-after Hispanic community of listeners. Advertisers can connect with SBS’s audio inventory via SBS’s direct sales team or through AdsWizz’s connected demand sources: AudioMatic, AdsWizz’s demand-side platform; the AdsWizz Marketplace, which enables publishers and advertisers to easily transact on audio inventory; and AdsWizz direct integrations with major third-party demand-side platforms (DSPs).

Marsha Fischer, VP of Strategic Partnerships at AdsWizz said of the announcement: "We are building important momentum in the audio advertising landscape through strategic relationships that help us connect advertisers with an ever-growing community of diverse listeners. SBS fit this bill perfectly - thanks to their enviable scope and incredible history serving engaging audio content to the U.S. Hispanic community since 1983. Now that we have exclusive access to their audio inventory, alongside a full stack migration, we will be able to deliver a truly holistic audio strategy that benefits not only SBS publishers and advertisers, but ultimately provides an incredible listening experience for audiences.”

Albert Rodriguez, President of SBS added: “AdsWizz is truly leading the charge on bridging the gap between publishers, ad tech, and sales channels. Today’s announcement demonstrates we are in very capable hands to accelerate our growth as a company looking to ramp up our efforts in the digital audio space. Although our roots are in radio broadcasting, we know the importance of adapting to evolving audience behaviors and having a relationship with  AdsWizz means we will be at the forefront of that change and will help ensure we keep delivering the best experiences to our dedicated audiences.”

In August 2022, Podcast Movement returned to Dallas, the city where it all began in 2014!

AdsWizz and Simplecast joined thousands of passionate podcasters and industry professionals worldwide for the industry's biggest conference and gathering for the podcast community.

In their "Podcast Monetization 101 (It's Not Just Ads)" session, Justine Benjamin, Head of Marketing at AdsWizz, and Caitlin Van Horn, Head of Marketing at Simplecast, guided the audience through various ways podcasters monetize podcasts.

Key Takeaways

Monetization is not a one size fits all approach. It's about understanding your goals for creating a podcast and finding a monetization approach that supports those objectives. While monetization doesn't have to be the end goal, if creators plan to go this route, it is best to have around 10K downloads to monetize (with some notable niche content exceptions). There are many ways for creators to monetize, including advertising sponsorships, subscriptions/memberships, and ancillary experiences such as events, games, and books.

Subscriptions and Revenue

People who crowd-fund and facilitate subscriptions build thriving communities with niche audiences, and enthusiasts is a great way to cultivate a community and recurring revenue from subscriptions and memberships. While not everyone will make north of $160K on platforms like Patreon, it is within the realm of possibility to cover maintenance and pay oneself a salary.

Events

Costs can add up for large venues but don’t discount the value of small venues (such as a bar with a back room), which allows creators to add more content to the tank and meet with their communities. While there are a lot of upfront costs for merchandising, it isn’t worthwhile until there is the largest audience to cover this expense, and most people don’t want to buy it.

Affiliates

For creators who like products, those products have programs that give them commissions or a sale cut. Podcast listeners are also loyal, and they are more likely to buy that product than any other medium.

Host-Read or Produced

There are two common approaches to ad creation. Host-reads usually have a low entry barrier for creators and provide a smooth listening experience with a high trust factor for the podcast audience. Produced ads are typically made by a brand or agency, pre-recorded, and often feature music and high production value.

Baked-In Ads

Can be host-read or produced ads baked into the content. Dynamically inserted ads facilitate technology to determine what kind of ad gets served based on factors such as daypart, context, and geography. These can be re-sold via back catalogs.

Ad Type

Can be host-read or produced ads baked into the content. Dynamically inserted ads facilitate technology to determine what kind of ad gets served based on factors such as daypart, context, and geography. These can be re-sold via back catalogs.

Ad Targeting

Today's robust targeting capabilities enable brands to reach the right listeners by context, device type, geo, demo, behavioral segments, and more.

Transactions

Direct Sales

  • Via the Host - a transaction happens between the content owner using an insertion order (IO) with execution parameters.
  • Via the Publisher - can be host-read or dynamic ad insertion (DAI) - there is an ad ops team that is entering IO into the campaign management system, which is tied to an ad server. The campaign management system can include all targeting parameters and can match them to the ad (matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match).

Programmatic

Negotiations are made on digital platforms on private marketplaces, programmatic guarantees, and public or open marketplaces. Advertisers can buy audiences by age, gender, genre, and behavior (income, interest in cars, etc.) Advertisers can also purchase impressions on specific channels/shows. That said, audience buying opens up more potential audiences an advertiser would have missed by just a channel or a show.

Closing Remarks

"As somebody who's worked in ad tech for a very long time, often in mediums that are considered traditional and make a digital transformation, the thought of dynamic ad insertion or programmatic replacing host-read can be scary. But it's not find-and-replace-all. It's a mix-and-match for what works for you. If you get larger, you can leverage technology to automate a process that can be very manual and open up your demand sources to get you more money."

-Justine Benjamin, Head of Marketing at AdsWizz

"Independent podcast creators, your voice is so valuable, and it's the heart and soul of this industry, so you should get paid for your actions! All of the exciting things in enterprise podcasts happened independently first: this is where innovation and real creativity occur. You are the blueprint. We don't want you to get scared or intimidated by monetization."

-Caitlin Van Horn, Head of Marketing at Simplecast
